  4. who led the National Front for the Liberation
  5. of Mozambique (Frelimo) during the campaign
  6. for independence in the early 1960s. When
  7. Mozambique achieved internal self-government
  8. in 1974, Chissano was appointed prime
  9. minister. After independence he served under
  10. Machel as foreign minister and on his death
  11. succeeded him as president.
